A newly opened gas field made low-cost fuel available there and many new industries were moving in. However, the field played out in 1891, bringing about a move of the company to Moundsville, West Virginia. Not only were materials needed for making fine glass nearby, there was plenty of gas and coal. |
The History of Heisey GlasswareAugust Heisey was born in Germany in 1842 and grew up in Merrittown, Pennsylvania. He married Susan Duncan, daughter of George Duncan, who owned Ripley & Co. glass manufacturing company in Pittsburgh. Along with his brother-in-law, James Duncan, he managed the company, renamed Duncan and Sons, after his father-in-law retired. However, in 1893, when the Duncan company opened a new plant in Washington, Pennsylvania, Heisey decided to move to Denver and develop his investments. |
Duncan-Miller Glass - a Piece of American HistoryIn 1865, George Duncan bought the glass factory of Ripley and Company in Pittsburgh, where he had been employed by D. C. Ripley. He formed a partnership with his sons under the name George Duncan and Sons. Augustus Heisey, his son-in-law, was a partner also. Sand was brought in on the Monongahela River, only two blocks away. |
